Photography project for Nokia

Capturing the night with the Nokia Lumia 925

As a wedding photographer I am often asked about cameras at weddings, and for the day job I use two Canon 5DMklll bodies and a variety of prime lenses, but it is often said that the best camera is the one you have with you, and I don’t lug my Canons around everywhere, so like most people, the camera I always have with me is the one in my phone.

However phone cameras do have their limitations – most notably in low light situations. According to Nokia, around 70% of smartphone photographs are taken after dark and two thirds of people said they were disappointed with the photos they had taken after dark or in low light conditions.

With my photojournalist hat on, I was recently asked by Nokia to put their new Lumia 925 phone to the test, travelling around the UK to capture human stories in the low-light conditions that would usually be impossible to capture on a phone. I have to say, I was very impressed with the results – for a phone they are a revelation. The 8.7megapixel Lumia 925 has a fast f2.0 Zeiss lens, so I could even capture action shots like the one below in a dim warehouse.

Below you can judge for yourself how it performs in some challenging situations, all in low light, including at the Unit23 Skatepark in Glasgow, Daniel and Liana’s wedding at Achnagairn House near Inverness, the work of The Whitechapel Centre, working with the homeless in Liverpool, 24-year-old cagefighter, Chloe Hinchliffe training in Leeds, the RSPCA Animal Hospital in North London, and backstage with burlesque performers in Soho.
